The American Idol 2026 event in Hawaii continued the show’s long-standing tradition of filming select episodes in the islands, once again bringing the national television competition to Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina on O’ahu’s leeward coast.

This season introduced a new chapter in the island tradition. The Top 30 contestants traveled to Hawaii for the brand-new ‘Ohana Round, where performances before the judges, contestants’ families, and a panel of industry insiders narrowed the field to the Top 20. The Top 20 then returned to the beachfront stage for two performance nights that marked America’s first vote of the season. Filmed in late January, the Hawaii episodes aired on ABC across three weeks in March, with host Ryan Seacrest and judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Carrie Underwood presiding over the oceanside stage.

Producing broadcast television on an open-air, beachfront site demands technical infrastructure that meets industry standards while adapting to Hawaii’s unique outdoor filming environment, from shifting natural light to trade winds and ocean air.

At the center of that environment stood the performance stage itself, which OnStage Hawai’i designed and built with a custom roof structure engineered to shelter contestants and the judging panel alike. Every element overhead was backed by comprehensive rigging support, keeping the installation compliant with the safety regulations governing both live entertainment and broadcast production. And because a beachfront shoot moves from full Hawaiian sun into golden hour and beyond, the lighting systems were calibrated specifically for television capture as natural conditions shifted throughout each performance day.

With that foundation in place, a three-episode network production could unfold without technical interruption; and Hawaii’s landscapes, culture, and the spirit of ‘ohana at the heart of this season could take their place in front of a national audience.
